PDF to Word Converter

Extract the text from a PDF and download it as an editable Word (.docx) file — entirely in your browser.

About this tool

This solves the most common version of "I need this PDF in Word" — getting the actual text out into a file you can edit — without pretending to do something much harder that most free tools quietly fail at: perfectly reconstructing complex tables, multi-column layouts, and precise formatting. This tool is honest about that trade-off. It extracts every line of text from your PDF, makes a reasonable guess at which lines are headings based on font size, and builds a real, valid .docx file you can open directly in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice.

It works by reading the PDF's text layer directly (using pdf.js, the same engine behind Firefox's built-in PDF viewer) rather than performing OCR, which means it only works on PDFs that already contain real, selectable text — not scanned images of text. If you can select and copy text from your PDF in a normal PDF viewer, this tool can extract it; if your PDF is a photo or scan with no text layer, no PDF-to-Word tool (free or paid) can recover text from it without OCR, which is a fundamentally different, much less accurate process.

Every line's vertical position on the page is used to reconstruct paragraph breaks in the same order they appear, and any line whose font is noticeably larger than the page's most common size is treated as a heading. This is a heuristic, not true document-structure detection — tables, multi-column layouts, and complex formatting will come through as a flat sequence of lines rather than being reconstructed as a table or set of columns.

Nothing is uploaded: your PDF is read and converted entirely in your browser, and the resulting .docx is built locally and handed straight to your downloads folder.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t this preserve my original formatting (tables, columns, fonts)?

Reconstructing exact layout from a PDF is a fundamentally different, much harder problem than extracting text — PDFs describe where each character sits on a page, not the underlying structure. This tool focuses on getting accurate, correctly-ordered text and basic headings into an editable file, which is what most "PDF to Word" searches actually need.

Why did it say "no selectable text found"?

That PDF is very likely a scanned image (a photo or scan saved as a PDF) rather than one with a real text layer. This tool reads existing text directly and doesn’t perform OCR, so there’s no text for it to extract.

Will the headings it detects always be correct?

It flags lines with noticeably larger text than the rest of the document as headings, which works well for typical documents but can occasionally miss a heading set in a similar size to body text, or flag a large piece of body text as one. Quick to fix by hand once opened in Word.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No — both the text extraction and the .docx file creation happen entirely in your browser using client-side libraries. Your PDF never leaves your device.
