YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Get every available thumbnail resolution for a YouTube video.

About this tool

YouTube serves each video's thumbnail at several fixed resolutions from a predictable, publicly accessible URL pattern based on the video ID — this tool extracts the video ID from whatever YouTube URL format you paste (a full watch URL, a youtu.be short link, an embed URL, or a Shorts URL) and shows every resolution directly.

Because these thumbnail images are already public static files served by YouTube itself, nothing needs to be fetched or processed on a server — this tool just works out the right URL and lets your browser load it directly from YouTube.

Not every video has every resolution available — maxresdefault (1280×720) is only generated for videos uploaded in HD, so older or lower-resolution uploads may not have it. If a resolution shows as broken, that size simply isn't available for that video; the other resolutions (hqdefault, mqdefault, sddefault, default) are available for essentially all videos.

Worked example: a full watch URL (youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID), a youtu.be short link (youtu.be/VIDEO_ID), and an embed URL (youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID) all extract to the exact same video ID and produce the exact same thumbnail URL — img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg — regardless of which format you happened to copy. The ID itself is always the same fixed-length string of letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores found in a consistent position in each URL format.

Frequently asked questions

Why is maxresdefault missing for some videos?

It’s only generated for videos uploaded in HD resolution. Older or lower-resolution uploads may not have a maxresdefault thumbnail at all — use hqdefault or sddefault instead.

Is this downloading anything from a server this site controls?

No — the thumbnail images are loaded directly from YouTube’s own servers using publicly known URL patterns. Nothing passes through or is processed by this site.

Can I use these thumbnails for my own content?

YouTube thumbnails are typically the property of the video owner or YouTube — check YouTube’s terms and the specific video’s licensing before reusing a thumbnail beyond personal reference or fair-use contexts like commentary.
