Every other tool on this site runs entirely as JavaScript in your browser and never contacts a server at all. This one is a deliberate exception, by necessity: your public IP address does reach this site’s server, since that’s the only way to answer the question — but location is looked up against a database bundled directly into the server itself, with no third-party service ever contacted. Nothing about the request is logged, stored, written to a cookie, or shared with any third party — it's handled and discarded the moment the response is sent back to you.

This shows the public IP address your device is currently using to reach the internet — the address a website you visit would see, not your device's private local network address (which is usually something like 192.168.x.x and only visible on your own network). It also shows whether that address is IPv4 or IPv6, and an approximate location derived from it.
Unlike every other tool on this site, this one necessarily involves a server: "what does the outside world see" can only be answered by something outside your own device, so your request does reach this site's server — but that's where it stops. Location is looked up against a database bundled directly into the server (no live third-party API call for either the IP or the location), so no data about you passes through any external service.
IP-based location is approximate, not GPS-precise — typically accurate to a city or region, sometimes only to a country, and it reflects where your IP address is registered rather than your literal physical position. This is especially true on mobile networks, VPNs, and corporate connections, which often geolocate to an ISP hub or exit point rather than your actual location. IPv6 addresses currently only resolve to a country in this tool's database, not a city or region — IPv6 location data is generally less complete than IPv4 across the industry, not a limitation specific to this tool.
Your public IP can change over time (most home internet connections use dynamic IPs that rotate periodically), and if you're on a VPN, this shows the IP and location of that VPN's exit point, not your device's own connection.
