URL Shortener

Shorten a long URL for free — no login, works instantly.

🔒 This tool contacts our own server — see exactly what that means.

Every other tool on this site runs entirely as JavaScript in your browser and never contacts a server at all. This one is a deliberate exception, by necessity: the URL you enter is sent to e309’s own URL-shortening service (a separate part of the same product family, not an unrelated third party) so it can create and store the short link — that’s the entire purpose of this tool, not an optional or incidental step. Nothing about the request is logged, stored, written to a cookie, or shared with any third party — it's handled and discarded the moment the response is sent back to you.

This describes only what this specific tool does with what you type into it. It doesn't cover the rest of this site — see the Privacy Policy for how analytics and advertising cookies are handled elsewhere.

About this tool

Shorten a long URL into a short, easy-to-share link — useful for social media posts, SMS, printed materials, or anywhere a long URL is awkward or gets cut off.

This runs through e309's own short-link service (3o9.in), the same one used for links generated elsewhere across this product family — no third-party URL shortener, no separate account needed. Pasting a URL that's already been shortened before returns the exact same short link rather than creating a new duplicate for the same destination.

Short links are genuinely public once created — anyone who has the short link can visit it and be redirected to your original URL, the same as any URL shortener. Don't use this for a link you need to keep private or restrict access to.

Frequently asked questions

Does shortening the same URL twice create two different short links?

No — pasting a URL that’s already been shortened returns the identical short link it already has, rather than creating a duplicate.

Can I choose my own custom short link?

Not through this tool — it always generates a random short key. Custom aliases are available through the service’s own admin interface.

How long do short links last?

Indefinitely — there’s no automatic expiry on a created short link.

Is the shortened link private?

No — anyone with the short link can use it to reach your original URL, the same as any URL shortener. Don’t shorten a link you need to keep restricted.
