Convert a Blog Title to a URL Slug

Turn a typical blog post title into a clean, URL-safe slug.

About this tool

A slug is the URL-friendly version of a title — lowercase, spaces replaced with hyphens (or underscores), and special characters stripped out. This tool converts any title into a clean slug suitable for a blog post URL, a file name, or an anchor link.

Clean slugs matter for SEO and readability: search engines and users can both parse a hyphenated, lowercase URL more easily than one with encoded spaces or special characters, and consistent slugs avoid duplicate-content issues from the same page being reachable at slightly different URLs.

The tool lowercases the text, replaces whitespace and punctuation with your chosen separator, collapses repeated separators into one, and trims any leading or trailing separator.

Worked example: "10 Easy Recipes!! (Ready in 30 Min.)" becomes "10-easy-recipes-ready-in-30-min" — the exclamation marks, parentheses, and period all get stripped out entirely (not converted to hyphens themselves), while the double space after "Recipes!!" collapses into a single hyphen rather than producing "recipes--ready." That collapsing step matters: without it, any run of punctuation or whitespace in the original title would leave multiple hyphens in a row in the final URL.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphen or underscore — which is better for SEO?

Hyphens are the widely recommended convention; Google has historically treated hyphens as word separators and underscores as word joiners, which can affect how a URL’s words are parsed.

Does this handle non-English characters?

Accented characters are transliterated to their closest ASCII equivalent where possible; characters with no reasonable ASCII equivalent are removed.

Will this remove numbers?

No, numbers are preserved — only whitespace and punctuation are converted or stripped.
