The common mistake is assuming Google enforces a character limit. It doesn't: Google truncates by rendered pixel width, in the same font it displays search results in (Arial, at a specific size for titles and a smaller one for descriptions). Two titles with the identical character count can behave completely differently — one full of narrow letters like i and l fits comfortably, while one full of wide capitals and W's or M's gets cut off well before the same character count. This tool measures your actual text the same way, using the real font metrics, rather than a generic "60 characters" rule of thumb that misleads as often as it helps.
Desktop and mobile have meaningfully different limits (both narrower on mobile), which is why both previews are here separately rather than one generic estimate — a title that fits perfectly on desktop can still truncate on a phone.
Because Google measures pixel width, not character count — titles with wide letters (capitals, W, M) use up more pixel space per character than ones with narrow letters (i, l, t), so two titles of the same length can render very differently.
