Randomize a List for Team Assignments

Preset a list of names ready to shuffle into a random order for team assignments.

About this tool

This shuffles a list of items (one per line) into random order, or picks a single random item from it — useful for randomizing a drawing order, assigning tasks fairly, or picking a winner from a list of names.

Shuffling uses the Fisher-Yates algorithm, the standard unbiased method for shuffling a list — every possible ordering is equally likely, unlike some naive shuffle implementations that subtly favor certain orderings. Random selection uses the same secure random source as the other generator tools on this site.

Nothing you paste here is sent anywhere — the shuffle happens entirely in your browser using your list as-is.

Frequently asked questions

Is the shuffle actually random, or could some orders be more likely?

It uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm, which is provably unbiased — every possible ordering of your list is equally likely, unlike some naive shuffle approaches.

Does this remove duplicate items from my list?

No, duplicates are preserved exactly as you entered them — this only reorders or selects from what you paste, it doesn’t deduplicate.

Can I pick more than one random item at once?

This version picks one item per click — click Pick Random Item again for another draw, or shuffle the whole list if you need a randomized order for everyone.
