Percentage to CGPA Calculator

Work backward from a percentage to the equivalent CGPA using the CBSE formula.

—
Always confirm against your official transcript, marksheet, or your university’s examination circular — this gives the standard published formula, not a guarantee your institution hasn’t issued its own variant.

About this tool

There is no single, UGC-mandated formula for converting CGPA to percentage in India — every university and board publishes its own multiplier, and a few use an offset on top of it, so the same 8.0 CGPA can mean a genuinely different percentage depending on where you studied. Applying a generic ×9.5 or ×10 to every CGPA is one of the most common ways students misstate their percentage on job applications and forms.

This tool covers the formulas published by a few large boards and universities: CBSE Class 10 uses Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for the 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes, but switched to a direct Percentage = CGPA × 10 for the 2021 and 2022 schemes — check which scheme your admission year falls under, since using the wrong one changes the result by several points. Anna University uses Percentage = CGPA × 10 for R-2013 through R-2021, confirmed by its Controller of Examinations circular. Mumbai University's CBCS regulations (2018 onwards) use Percentage = (CGPA × 7.1) + 11.

If your institution isn't listed, or you know its exact formula differs from these, use "Custom formula" and enter the multiplier and offset from your own university's circular or transcript footnote — the calculation is always Percentage = (CGPA × Multiplier) + Offset, and the reverse direction simply inverts that: CGPA = (Percentage − Offset) ÷ Multiplier.

Worked example: a VTU CGPA of 8.00 under the 2018 scheme converts to (8.00 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%, not the 80% a generic ×10 would suggest — a 7.5-point difference that matters when a job portal or scholarship form has a hard percentage cutoff.

University policies do change — some institutions have moved away from formula-based conversion toward issuing conversion certificates computed from raw marks. When your official transcript or marksheet already shows a printed percentage, that figure always takes priority over any value calculated here.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one official CGPA-to-percentage formula for all of India?

No — there is no single UGC-mandated formula. Each university and board (CBSE, VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and others) publishes its own multiplier, and some add an offset on top of it. Always use the formula your specific institution has published.

My university isn’t in the list — what should I do?

Select "Custom formula" and enter your university’s exact multiplier and offset, usually printed on your transcript, in your university’s examination circular, or in your student handbook.

Should I trust this calculator over my official transcript?

No — if your marksheet or transcript already prints a percentage, that figure is your official record and always takes priority. Use this tool only when your document shows CGPA alone and you need an estimate for a form that asks for percentage.

Why does VTU have two different formulas?

VTU used Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for its 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes, then moved to a direct Percentage = CGPA × 10 for the 2021 and 2022 schemes. Which one applies to you depends on your admission year and scheme, not just which university you attended.
